Remember The Church In Your Prayers
Each of us has a prayer life. Some are inclined to pray in the morning or the evening, others before meals, a few as they drive to and from work, or right before settling in for a peaceful night’s sleep. A few are most likely to pray when they find themselves in situations for which the immediate solution or answer is not available and in prayer they turn the course of action over to God. Whatever your practice may be, I ask you to remember our SC Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in your prayers this month.

Happy New Year!

As I write this, we have just completed our first-ever Cantata/Pageant evening. It was wonderful to see so many of you there in our beautifully decorated sanctuary. In what was a wonderful evening of Christmas spirit, the Chorale kicked things off, presenting two a cappella Christmas carols, the Christmas anthem Gesu Bambino, and Daniel Pinkham’s three-movement Christmas Cantata, accompanied by organist Lee Kohlenberg.

Guest tenor Brink Norton sang John Jacob Niles’ beautiful Appalachian carol I Wonder as I Wander, Lee and I played the organ/piano duet Prelude on “Christmas Day” by Gustav Holst (arr. Mansfield), and the Handbell Choir played two joyful Celebrations! Following the Cantata, the children took center stage, performing in the church for what I’m told was the first time in many years. Performing the pageant “The Simple Gifts of Christmas,” which centers on the friendly beasts of the Christmas story, the children sang and acted wonderfully - performing the entire play from memory. Thanks to all who helped make the pageant a success, from the adult actors to the manger builders to the reception folks - the end result was a moving performance that put all in attendance in the Christmas spirit.

Why not make it a New Year’s resolution to become more involved in the music of St. John’s? While the Chorale makes up for its small size with wonderful voices, we are always looking for new singers! Rehearsals take place Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:45 in the Choir Room and the Chorale gathers in the balcony each Sunday morning at 9:45. The Handbell Choir rehearses Wednesdays at 5:30, and is always seeking new ringers. Come make a joyful noise unto the Lord!

In closing, I wish to thank the Vestry and congregation of St. John’s for the generous gift I was given at the Vestry Christmas party. It was very kind of you all and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Best wishes to your family for a happy, safe, and prosperous New Year!

In music,
Todd
