Pastor's Corner, Jan 2010

Another Christmas has come and gone and a New Year is upon us. Many of us have perhaps engaged in our routine and annual practice of making a few resolutions that this year – “things will be different!” The most prevalent of New Year’s resolutions always seem to deal with weight loss, physical shape, financial planning, and relationship issues. Indeed, this year we profess – “things will be different!” But will they?

Six years after stepping off a plane from Africa, Guy Nesenda has several titles he is proud to be called: husband, father, student, and most recently homeowner. Titles he says he owes to hard work, sacrifice and the support system he found in Charlotte, NC.

Before coming to the United States, Guy was studying political science at a university in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unfortunately, problems with security in his home country forced him to relocate to the United States. Arriving at the airport in 2003, Guy had several goals he wanted to achieve but knew it was going to take hard work. He sought out social support which helped him find an affordable place to live, and more importantly to him, a learning institution where he studied medical office administration.

Each year, more than 20,000 young people age out of the foster care system. This group is at a high risk of dropping out of school, unplanned pregnancies, poor health, criminal activity and homelessness.

With LFS Carolinas providing supervision and support to foster families who care for more than 500 children across the Carolinas each year, these numbers hit very close to home. It was in direct response to this issue that LFS Carolinas began Opportunity 4 Supervised Apartments (O4SA).

“Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.” Proverbs 4:25-27

Being a teenager is a time for a lot of different things. It is a time to learn, grow and most of all it is a point of change.  As a ninth-grader in high school, Nathan* like any other boy has his favorite school subjects, sports and goals for the future. Nathan lives in a LFS Carolinas group home and is using this time to change for the better.

Nathan came to LFS Carolinas after having difficulty living with his stepmother, where he found himself in a repetitive cycle of fighting.  To prevent the fighting, he was assigned to a group home by the Department of Social Services (DSS).
